The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are just four days away after four years of waiting, with the Opening Ceremony scheduled for July 27th. 10,500 athletes from over 200 nations will compete in 302 events in the host city of London for a chance to win Olympic medals. London has been preparing for the Olympics ever since they were selected as the host city in 2005.
This year’s Olympics will be more social than ever, with plans already underway to connect with their global audience estimated to be more than 4 billion viewers through social media. From Twitter and Facebook to Instagram and blogs, there will be live Q&As with athletes, blogging of events, real-time standings, and more. Teams and individual athletes are embracing social media as well, using Twitter and other networks to update their fans.
One team to include mobile in their social media arsenal is the Olympic Team Netherlands or Dutch Olympic Team. They released their official app powered by Mobile Roadie a few weeks ago to much fanfare. Inside the app, fans can view the profiles of all the members of the Dutch Olympic Team, view the schedule of events, take Olympic-themed Photo Cards, watch videos, and much more.
