Switching to the Smart Side: Half of Feature Phone Owners Switched to Smartphones in April

A recent study by comScore revealed that almost half of all feature phone owners who “acquired” a new mobile device switched to smartphones in the month of April 2012.

In 2011, the percentage of feature phone owners who chose smartphones as their new device was 38%. In April 2012, this percentage increased to 47.5%, a 9.5% increase in one year. On the other hand, 50.7% of feature phone owners who acquired a new device in April 2012 chose to stick with feature phones – a 9.9% decrease from last year’s number.

So what type of smartphones are these new smartphone owners choosing?

The majority – around 61.5% – of these new smartphone owners chose Android devices. 25.2% chose an Apple device, 7.1% chose a Microsoft device, and 4.8% chose RIM. Interestingly, amongst existing smartphone owners who switched to a new smartphone, 54.2% chose a Google device, 33.5% chose an Apple device, 9.6% chose RIM, and only 3% chose a Microsoft device.
