App of the Week: Hot Chelle Rae

posted by Terri Kim

From Nashville, Tennessee, Hot Chelle Rae is having an amazing year. Formed in 2005, this four member pop rock band has been making their way into mainstream music, opening for Lil Jon, playing multiple venues at SXSW 2007, and going on tour with the band Vedera. But what really set Hot Chelle Rae ablaze was the release of their single “Tonight Tonight” in 2011 which immediately reached double platinum status, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Now in addition to the release of their “Whatever” album on November 29, 2011, Hot Chelle Rae has released their official app powered by Mobile Roadie. Fans can keep in touch with Ryan Follese, Nash Overstreet, Ian Keaggy, and Jamie Follese right on the app, catching up on news, tour dates, listening to music, viewing videos and pics, buying merchandise, and so much more.

San Diego Zoo Launches Their Official App!

posted by Terri Kim

From the dedication and collaborative efforts of both the Mobile Roadie and San Diego Zoo teams, we would like to present the official San Diego Zoo mobile app.

Located in Balboa Park in San Diego, CA, the San Diego Zoo is 100 acres of 9 themed exhibits where over 4,000 animals of 800 different species roam in open habitats that have been designed to replicate their homes in the wild. One of the most popular exhibits in the Zoo is Panda Canyon, which is home to three giant pandas. In fact, the Zoo is one of the few in the world to house this rare animal. Another popular exhibit is Polar Rim, where visitors can view Kalluk, Tatqiq & Chinook swim underwater in their 130,000 gallon pool and lounge around on the shore.

From planning your trip to after your visit and everything in between, the app was created to be your comprehensive guide to the Zoo. Before you visit, browse through the different exhibits, animals, and catch up on all the events going on. You can then buy tickets through the app and plan your route via the Google map feature. Once you’re at the zoo, use the app to find dining options, shows & activities, and with the detailed map you’ll never lose your way. Don’t forget to upload pictures and share your thoughts on the Fan Wall through the app via social networks.

One of the most anticipated features of the app is the integration of live cams. Users can view real-time streaming of the Zoo’s Polar Cam and its recently upgraded HD Panda Cam right on their phones anytime of the day.

Through our platform, the San Diego Zoo is able to pack 100 acres of content into one app for visitors to enjoy. “This app gives greater access to the Zoo when they’re planning their visit or spending a day with us. We expect that the mobile access to our live animal cams, combined with detailed descriptions and beautiful images, will add up to family-friendly entertainment and a highly repeatable education resource.” said Ted Molter, Director of Marketing for the Zoo.

We’re honored to power this app “that is going to bring the joy and wonder of the San Diego Zoo to animal lovers’ smartphones everywhere,” Michael Schneider, Mobile Roadie CEO, expressed.

The top artist of 2011, according to Billboard Magazine, is none other than Adele. With an album that spent 13 weeks on top of the Billboard 200, sold more than 13 million copies worldwide, and garnered 6 Grammy nominations, Adele is a music phenomenon who is exploding not only in the music industry but in the mobile world as well.

It was only a few months ago that Adele launched her official mobile app powered by Mobile Roadie, but already it is being recognized not just by fans but by industry experts as well. The App Store editorial team has chosen the official Adele app as one of 2011′s best apps, featuring it on the front page under the Music apps category of App Store Rewind 2011 (iTunes France).

The official Adele app is featured alongside popular interactive music apps djay for iPhone & iPod, Songify, and Tap DJ, as well as Biophilia, which is Bjork’s interactive studio album in the form of an app that cost 3 to 4 times more than a regular album.

App of the Week: Ryman Auditorium

posted by Terri Kim

The historic Ryman Auditorium, the most famous former home to the legendary Grand Ole Opry, is a U.S. National Historic Landmark located in Nashville, Tennessee. Opened over a century ago in 1892, Ryman Auditorium, originally known as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, has been featured numerous times in movies and TV shows, has hosted music legends like Neil Young and Patty Griffin, and has received outstanding honors, most notably Venue of the Year by the Academy of Country Music and Pollstar Magazine‘s National Theater of the Year in 2003, 2004 & 2010.

Earlier in the year, Ryman Auditorium successfully launched the redesign of their website, www.ryman.com, and from there, their partner Nissan North America “led the way in [the] next step of [Ryman's] digital makeover,” said Ryman Auditorium General Manager Sally Williams. This next step of Ryman’s digital makeover, following Nissan North America’s Innovation for All promise, was none other than the launch of their official mobile app powered by Mobile Roadie.

Available for iPhone and Android, the official Ryman Auditorium mobile app allows users to view the event schedule, browse through photos, shop for Ryman Auditorium merchandise, purchase tickets via Ticketmaster mobile integration, check-in to events, chat with other users, and so much more. Williams says, “We’re excited that these apps offer another way for us to interact with customers while making it easier for fans to share their excitement about Ryman events with each other.”

The “Mother Church of Country Music” has an impressive lineup of events that you definitely should check out this month. To download the official Ryman Auditorium app, visit http://road.ie/the-ryman

3.3 Spotlight: App Detection for Mobile Browsers

posted by Terri Kim

App Detection for Mobile Browsers is one of the new marketing features in Mobile Roadie 3.3 that will increase app downloads with very little effort. By inputting a unique code found in your CMS into your website, users will be given the option to download your app via a popup when they visit your site from an iPhone or Android mobile device (seen in the Katy Perry image above). This popup will show only one time per mobile device to avoid annoying website visitors.

This promotional tool is just one of the ways we are helping our customers keep up with evolving mobile trends. The number of consumers who have smartphones is growing rapidly, not just in the US but in other parts of the world as well. Below is a chart summarizing the number of smartphones sold in different parts of the world this year (Data courtesy of VisionMobile).

As more people own smartphones, the more they will visit the Web through their mobile devices. The graph below shows the increase in mobile traffic, around 153%, from 2010 to 2011 (Data courtesy of Walker Sands). *Not included in the graph is mobile traffic during November 2011, which measured 15% of all online traffic thanks largely in part to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Approximately 1 in 10 consumers use mobile devices to access the Web. Although Android has taken over iPhone as the most-used device for mobile browsing this year with 42% (up from 22% last year), these two devices (Android & iPhone) account for 74% of total mobile traffic. The following graph breaks down mobile traffic by device in Q3 2011 (Data courtesy of Walker Sands).

So what does this all mean for you and your app? The App Detection for Mobile Browsers tool takes advantage of the fact that the average site gets 10% of its traffic from mobile devices (and growing), and gives you a way to market your app to smartphone users who are already engaged with your brand without being aggressive. This leads to a better experience for users who no longer have to search for your app via the App Store or Android market, or have to wonder whether or not an app is available for your brand.

By targeting consumers who are already on your website and engaged with the brand, the conversion rate from site visitor to active app user increases with this simple, easy-to-implement promotional tool.

For a complete tutorial on how to integrate App Detection for Mobile Browsers into your website, please check out our support article on this feature.

App of the Week: @LeWeb Paris 2011

posted by Terri Kim

LeWeb Paris, Europe’s #1 tech event, is back this year but this time the event will span three days, December 7th-9th, 2011, for the first time ever. Over 3,000 participants and 50 partners & exhibitors from 60 countries will be joining together in the beautiful city of Paris, France to discuss the theme of this year “SoLoMo, SOCIAL-LOCAL-MOBILE” which describes the new era of computing, including social media, local, mobile, and the new technological advances that are changing the online landscape. LeWeb’11 speakers include Karl Lagerfeld (Fashion Designer), Eric Schmidt (Google), Daniel Ek (Spotify), Mike McCue (Flipboard), Kevin Systrom (Instagram), and so many more.

LeWeb is the place to be for any technology professional, and we are honored to be the official mobile app sponsor for the third year in a row. Each year, we are updating the LeWeb app with new features that revolutionize conference apps. In 2009, we partnered with Ustream to power the official iPhone app for LeWeb. The official LeWeb 2009 app was the first app to allow users to watch live streaming of a conference. In 2010, in addition to the official LeWeb 2010 app for iPhone, we launched the Android version of the app as well.

This year for the official LeWeb 2011 mobile app, available for both iPhone and Android, we’ve partnered with Ustream again, but this time for the first time you can view live streams from multiple channels so you don’t have to miss a thing. In addition to live streams, you can keep track of the conference schedule, connect with other attendees, share your thoughts & experiences while at the conference, and view official photos & videos.

If you’re going to LeWeb this year, download the app to stay connected and in-the-know of all that’s going on at the three-day conference. You don’t want to miss the tech event of the year. If you’d like to register for the event, click here.

And don’t forget that we are hosting a Meetup with our friends Spotify, Midem, Webdoc, and Bopler on December 7, 2011. RSVP for free here. We would love if you could come out to this.

Mobile Usage during Black Friday and Cyber Monday

posted by Terri Kim

Last weekend was a dream for both brick & mortar and online retailers. More than 226 million consumers visited retailers during the Black Friday weekend (a 6.6% jump from the 212 million shoppers last year). and collectively spent a whopping $52.4 billion dollars, up 16% from $45 billion the previous year, according to the National Retail Federation.

But what really made a jump this year was online sales, specifically online sales made through mobile devices this past weekend (Data from IBM Coremetrics Benchmark Reports).

On Cyber Monday, online sales reached $1.25 billion, an increase of 22% from $1.025 billion last year. Mobile devices accounted for 10.75% of online site traffic, an increase of 162% from 3.88% in 2010, while mobile sales accounted for 6.6% of Cyber Monday sales, an increase of 193% from 2.3% in 2010.

On Black Friday, an estimated $816 million in online sales was made, up 26% from last year’s Black Friday sales of $648 million. Mobile devices accounted for 14.33% of online site traffic, up 157% from last year’s 5.56%, while mobile sales accounted for 9.8% of Black Friday online sales, up 210% from 3.2% of last year’s sales.

On both days, the #1 mobile device of choice for consumers to shop from was the iPhone, followed by the iPad, and then Android. See chart below:

Retail sales made from mobile devices will continue to grow due to the increase in smartphone owners, better technologies that are making it more easy to shop with a mobile device, and the 24/7 convenience of shopping online.
