The main purpose of the app, according to Emery, was to “provide another communication platform” for fans of Adele. “The social aspect has been incredibly popular; there’s a whole set of people that use the app on an hourly basis.” Indeed, the #1 Top User in the app has made over 6,000 comments and 6,500 Fan Wall posts!

And when it comes down to iPhone or Android, there is no clear favorite amongst Adele fans. Both the iPhone and Android versions of Adele’s app are being downloaded by hundreds of thousands of fans in relatively equal numbers, with Android edging slightly over iPhone users.

With Adele’s tremendous success in her music career, it’s no surprise that she’s dominating the mobile world as well. This past weekend, her app took the top spot on the Top Free Music Apps chart in Android Market.

So what can we learn from Adele’s mobile success? Emery says, “If you have a mainstream artist or brand and get coverage on these stores, it [your app] can really take off.” Not only that, but mobile in the music industry is taking off: Music apps are the fasting growing category in app usage, above games; and according to Emery, around 10-15% of visitors are coming from mobile devices, including tablets.

The top artist of 2011, according to Billboard Magazine, is none other than Adele. With an album that spent 13 weeks on top of the Billboard 200, sold more than 13 million copies worldwide, and garnered 6 Grammy nominations, Adele is a music phenomenon who is exploding not only in the music industry but in the mobile world as well.

We revealed a little about Aurasma in our App of the Week post last week, but we wanted you to test it out first before revealing more. If you haven’t yet, download the Tech City app and scan the image of the Trampery logo below using your smartphone:

Pretty cool, right? This blending of two worlds- the physical and the virtual- is made possibly by Aurasma, augmented reality (AR) technology that was developed by UK-based Autonomy. Tech City is the first to be released in the series of apps will be created by Aurasma in partnership with the UK Government and Tech City, which couldn’t be more appropriate seeing how Tech City is a leader when it comes to cultivating and spreading technological innovation.

How Aurasma Works?
Aurasma uses “the smartphone’s camera, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, and its position, acceleration, & direction to recognize objects &  images to seamlessly merge augmented reality actions into the scene. Without the need for barcodes or tags, the app is able to see its surrounding environment and make it fully interactive.” Through Aurasma, users can view “Auras”, which are virtual videos, animations, webpages, and the like, on top of certain images, symbols and objects in the real world that come to life when scanned.

The Prime Minister, after testing Aurasma on the Tech City app, said, “I’ve just seen Aurasma in action and it’s clear this app is about to change the way we see and interact with information. What Aurasma means for the future of mobile engagement?

By 2015, International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that 182.7 billion mobile apps will be downloaded, close to a 1600% increase from the 10.7 billion apps downloaded in 2010.  This impressive figure can be attributed to increases in smartphones and apps- both free and paid- that will continue to occur in the mobile market.

The top two app stores on the market today- Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market- account for 19.5 billion apps downloaded so far.

In the App Store, which currently has over 425,000 different apps for download, 15 billion apps have been downloaded, up 50% from 10 billion in January 2011 and up 400% from 3 billion in January 2010.  Reports indicate that the average iOS device owner will buy 61% more apps in 2011 than a year ago, totaling 83 app downloads this year, and be willing to pay 14% more for paid apps than a year ago.  82% of mobile apps for download are free.

In the Android Market, which is home to over 200,000 apps, 5 billion apps have been downloaded since launching in 2008, up 50% from 3 billion in May 2011 and up 350% from 1 billion downloads in August 2010.  In just under two months from May to July 2011, over a billion apps for Android were downloaded.

Time Spent on Mobile Apps

And with all these downloads, it makes sense that smartphone users are spending more time using mobile apps than surfing the Web, according to a recent study by Flurry. Time spent on mobile apps per user jumped 88% to 81 minutes from June 2010 to June 2011, while time spent web browsing only increased 16%.

The mobile app market is expected to be worth $14.1 billion next year and jump 160% to $36.7 billion in revenue from direct sales, in-app purchases and mobile app advertising in 2015. However, these estimates may be understated given the tremendous growth of the mobile app industry in recent years.

What do you need to do once your app goes live in the app store? Here are some quick tips on how to maximize your app’s exposure and get the word out about what you’ve got to offer.

* Tweet about it. Twitter is a powerful tool and you probably already know that. Tell your followers about your new app on Twitter.

* Download your Fan Wall widget and use it on your website. You can find your widget in the CMS dashboard.

* Talk it up. This might sound silly in the age of the Internet, but word-of-mouth is still one of the most powerful forms of advertising. Don’t hold back.

* Communicate with your users. Use the Fan Wall to interact with your fans. Listen to what they have to say and respond to their questions. Use push notifications to keep them updated on important events.

* Give them a reason to keep coming back. This is by far is the most important thing you can do after your app has gone live. So what can you do to keep them coming back? Offer them exclusive material on the app, make advance tickets available – anything that keeps them engaged with your mobile platform. One idea that has met with success in this area is to give away a prize for participation in the app. Media Temple ran such a contest and gave away an iPad, among other prizes. Their contest resulted in participation from thousands of customers. Another way to keep users engaged is through push notifications. Ashton Kucher uses push notifications to share his A+ list of top videos every week. Taylor Swift engaged her fans in another unique way recently by streaming a 13-hour meet and greet live via Ustream to over 10,000 of her app users.

The bottom line is that once your app is live, you’ve got to get the word out there and make it engaging for the users. Building your mobile brand is really no different from building your brand offline or online. Bring people in by word of mouth or any other means possible, show them what you’ve got, and give them a reason to keep coming back.
